Getting Results Through Retail Sales

A retail sale is defined as a sale made directly to the consumer (not through a store or a distributor). Retail sales are a vital part of your cookbook’s success. This sales channel provides the highest profit potential. Usually, you will be selling your book at 100% of the retail price, though seasonal or special discounts may be offered throughout the year to entice sales. Peggy Sholly, author of Down Home Delicious, appeared on the Delicious Mischief radio show on CNN 650 (Houston, TX) on Saturday, February 16 with host John DeMers.

The Junior League of Buffalo recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their cookbook Great Lake Effects by hosting “An Afternoon of Culinary Delights,” a combined event intended to honor their award-winning cookbook and serve as a fund-raiser for their organization. The guest speaker was Janice Okun, food critic for the Buffalo News. The honored guest was Margaret M. Martin, AWS, a local Buffalo artist whose beautiful artwork is featured in the cookbook.  Miss Martin generously agreed to sign the cookbooks and donate one of her lithographs to the auction.  The menu items selected from the cookbook included Father Demske’s Mushroom Soup, Chicken Piccata, and Apple Crisp with Lemon Honey Cream. The sell-out event had over 330 women in attendance.  In addition to the $1,500 in cookbooks sold, over $20,000 was raised for the League.
