Holiday Traditions – From Our House to Yours

For most of us, it doesn't seem to matter where we are geographically, personally, or spiritually; the holidays are a time for reflection and thanksgiving. We thought you might enjoy reading a few traditions and memories from the Favorite Recipes Press family. You will discover that, like many of you, our family comes from different backgrounds and places, as well. And, of course, food seems to be the bond that ties us together!

EXCITING NEWS ON THE JANUARY 2010 ATLANTA MART TRADE SHOW!
Our new sales rep group, Dugan-Bliss & Associates, was so excited to hear of the tremendous response to sending in food samples for the upcoming January Atlanta’s AmericasMart (the largest market in the USA for all home/gift/gourmet needs) that they have extended the days for us to have samples in place at their hospitality table to the entire show!

That means that we can have 3 books featured on each day (Jan 7 – 13, 2010) for a total of 21 titles for the 7 day period!  With that in mind, Anne Pritchard (apritchard@frpbooks.com) now has more slots to fill, and they'll be going fast, so please contact her via e-mail ASAP if you want to be included.

The Cookbook Marketplace area will be situated at the very front of their huge showroom where the buyers actually “line up for lunch”!  So, there will be a captive audience to serve the samples to and take orders while they wait in line – how great is that?

Since this show is coming very early this year, and right on the heels of the holiday, details need to be nailed down quickly so you'll know exactly how much food to prepare. Different days have various traffic patterns and some days won't require as much food to be sent as others. So, if you would like to cook up a batch of sweet bread (morning) or snacks (afternoon) or cake/cookies/desserts (afternoon or evening), let Anne know. You will need to include a copy of your book with the food samples, since Anne will need to keep her regular display copy of your book in our assigned showroom area. Once a date and time slot is assigned to you, Anne will forward all the details for sending the food.

Many thanks for participating! This is a fabulous way to draw even more attention to your title!
Happy Holidays to All!

I enjoy putting together tins of treats for family, friends, neighbors, my children’s teachers, etc. at Christmas time. Each year, I try some new recipes for variety, but there are my standards – chocolate covered pretzels, buckeyes, and these delicious delights. When I discovered White Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites, I couldn't stop eating them. I soon discovered I wasn't the only one! I often take these to parties and almost immediately I have someone asking for the recipe. With five ingredients, this recipe is super simple to put together. I also love how kid-friendly it is, so my kiddos can assist in the kitchen. Enjoy these yummy treats … I bet you can't eat just one!

White Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites

4 cups of crisp rice cereal

3 cups miniature marshmallows

1 cup creamy peanut butter

1 cup dry roasted peanuts

4 cups (24 ounces) white chocolate morels, melted

Mix the cereal, marshmallows, peanut butter and peanuts in a large bowl with a spatula. Pour the white chocolate over the cereal mixture and quickly mix to coat. Spread cereal mixture on a sheet of waxed paper and let stand until cool and firm. Break into small pieces and store in an airtight container.

Note: Melt the white chocolate morsels in a saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, or in the microwave on High for two minutes.

Preparing for the special opening of the Sandra Day O'Connor Exhibit at the Arizona Historical Society Museum has taken months but it was well worth the effort as 300 people filled the Museum foyer for the private invitation only opening. They enjoyed the displays and sampled the tasty appetizers and desserts from the group’s cookbook, Tastes & Treasures. The Great Pumpkin Cookies (pg 162) and Pecan Squares (pg 172), were just a few of the delightful delicacies served. There were speeches in the Steele Auditorium with Sandra Day O'Connor giving an inspirational talk. In other great news, Tastes & Treasures won Honorable Mention at the Nashville Book Festival this November.

Renee Ferguson, author of Talk Turkey to Me, was featured in the Daily Herald (Geneva, IL) on November 22, 2009.
Recipes from The Junior League of Monroe’s cookbooks, The Cotton Country Collection and Cooking in High Cotton, were featured in the News-Star (Monroe, LA) on December 2, 2009. The article focused on holiday baking ideas.

The Junior League of Columbus, GA’s new cookbook, Pull Up a Chair, was mentioned in the December 9, 2009 issue of the Ledger-Enquirer (Columbus, GA).

In its second year, Gathering at the River Cookbook Fair & Tasting brought cookbook publishers and cookbook collectors together for an afternoon in cookbook heaven! This year’s event was held at Trinity Episcopal Church, publishers of Shall We Gather, in Wetumpka, AL. The four hour event brought cookbook publishers from Southern Alabama, Birmingham, Huntsville and as far away as Athens, GA, who set up elaborate displays to show off their cookbooks and offer samples. An estimated 400 attendees tasted their way through more than 25 booths.

Cookbook publishers also participated in a recipe contest submitting recipes from their cookbook featuring an Alabama food product as a prominent ingredient. Sheila Thomas, Executive Editor of Recipes Worth Sharing, was awarded the prestigious 3rd place for Lemon Gingersnaps, an incredible cookie recipe featured in Recipes Worth Sharing from Tables of Content by the Junior League of Birmingham.

The idea of a cookbook fair originated with the Women of Trinity Episcopal Church as a way to gain PR and sell their cookbooks. Rebecca Gregory, chairman of this year’s event, said this is a win-win situation. All publishers of cookbooks are looking for cookbook buyers. All cookbook collectors loved looking at all the cookbooks and tasting the wonderful food. It is estimated that around $3,000 was raised from ticket sales and booth space. There were two articles written up in local papers, along with posts and tweets about the event all over the web. Alison Lewis, cookbook author from Birmingham, was happy to have sold 19 cookbooks and a couple of her cupcake t-shirts. Another vendor said the four hour fair was well worth their time as they sold about 25 books.

The concept of a regional cookbook fair is a great idea for anyone looking for a new outlet to promote and sell their book and to raise additional funds. If you need additional information, please contact Sheila Thomas at sthomas@frpbooks.com.
