Chris Capen, President and Publisher

Chris Capen is the founder of Beckon Books and the president and publisher of the Southwestern Publishing Group. He has over twenty-five years of custom book publishing experience and has been long recognized as an innovative leader in this field with numerous best-selling, award-winning books. Prior to joining the Southwestern Publishing Group, Chris founded and managed Tehabi Books. There, he led all strategic, financial, marketing, sales, and development activities of the company, publishing numerous titles and selling over five million books. Tehabi specialized in creating and selling high-quality illustrated books for leading brands, traditional book publishers, and major retailers. Chris also pioneered the development of strategic book publishing programs that fill vital marketing, communications, and merchandising needs for corporations. These programs included books that served as centerpieces for major anniversaries, marketing campaigns, fundraising initiatives, brand extensions, and premium and hospitality programs. Chris’s work has been recognized by the publishing industry with more than twenty Benjamin Franklin Awards for best-of-category Books of the Year.

Tim Underwood, CFO

Tim was recruited from our outside audit firm in 1987 and has been a part of the Southwestern/Great American family for most of the years since. He is now in the position of Chief Financial Officer for Great American Opportunities, Inc. and handles all financial issues for Southwestern Publishing Group, Inc. as well. Tim graduated from MTSU with a B.S. in Business Administration and a major in Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant, as well as a Certified Management Accountant.

Sheila Thomas, Publisher

Sheila Thomas has worked closely with organizations, corporations, restaurants, and self-publishers on the development, manufacturing, and marketing of custom cookbooks for more than 20 years. She has been intricately involved in dozens of award-winning cookbooks and was the driving force behind Recipes Worth Sharing, More Recipes Worth Sharing, Cooking up a Classic Christmas, and Cookin’ with Corky’s, a Southern landmark BBQ restaurant. As publisher of Favorite Recipes Press and Historic Hospitality, Sheila is responsible for each book from conception to completion, overseeing all aspects of the project including sales, client relations, and design, production, and editorial work. She gives cooking demonstrations and leads discussions across the country about community cookbooks. Sheila is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Southern Foodways Alliance, and the Independent Book Publishers Association.

Kristin Connelly, Managing Editor

Kristin Connelly has worked in the book publishing industry since 1999, implementing scheduling software and other vital systems to streamline development processes. In 2011, she joined Southwestern Publishing Group as managing editor, where she is responsible for project scheduling, budgeting, and operations for Beckon Books, Greenwich Publishing, Favorite Recipes Press, and Blue Sneaker Press. As managing editor, Kristin oversees delivery needs and production parameters, coordinating with clients as well as each imprint’s publisher, art director, and production manager to ensure the timely delivery of product. She also supervises all company operations to determine the most efficient systems and to help manage them from book launch to product delivery.
